The honest comparison
| DIY kit | Professional | |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | $10–$25 kit | $69 summer special / pair ($45 single) |
| Your time | 1–3 hours, yourself | ~1 hour, we do it |
| UV sealant | Often none or a weak wipe-on | Cured UV protective coating |
| How long it lasts | Weeks to a few months | ~1–3 years |
| Risk of swirl marks | On you to sand evenly | Machine-polished, even finish |
| Best for | Light haze, tight budget, hands-on | Heavy oxidation or results that last |
When a DIY kit is the right call
The haze is light, you enjoy doing your own car care, and you don't mind redoing it in a few months. A quality kit uses the same sand-and-polish idea we do — just buy one that includes a UV sealant, and go slow through the grits so you don't leave swirl marks.
When to call a pro
The lenses are heavily yellowed or pitted, you'd rather not risk sanding your own car, or you want it to last for years instead of weeks. That durable, sealed finish — done in about an hour at your location — is the main thing a kit can't easily match.
It's about durability, not magic
There's no secret a shop has that a kit doesn't — it's the same plastic and the same physics. What you're really paying a professional for is an even, machine-polished finish and a properly cured UV coat that holds up, plus not having to spend your Saturday on it or risk a mistake on your own car. If a $20 kit gets you through, great. If you want it done once and done right, that's us.
